Rema Makes Historic Win At MTV VMA As His Calm Down Remix With Selena Gomez Wins Best Afrobeats Song Of The Year.
Nigerian Musician Rema has become the first African artist to win the Best Afrobeats Song award at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Rema won the award with his ‘Calm Down Remix, on which he featured Selena Gomez.
This is a historic win for the Nigerian musician as his win makes him the very first artiste doing the Afrobeats genre to get hold of a VMAs plaque. The Best Afrobeats Song category is a new category that has been introduced to the VMAs awards scheme.
Mounting the stage with Selena Gomez to take the award, Rema expressed gratitude to all musicians whom he believed have played a role in establishing the Afrobeats genre. “I am so happy but one thing I will not forget to do tonight is forget to shoutout the people who open the doors for me. Big shouts to Fela, who started Afrobeats in the first place, 2 Baba, Don Jazzy, D Banj, De Prince, Runtown, Timaya, 2Face, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido” he said.
